As the end of the year approaches, it can be hard to keep ourselves and the team motivated and energised. Make the last few weeks of the year inspiring and fun with these simple ideas:
Make your daily huddle an opportunity for the team to reflect on what the practice has accomplished this year.
Set some time aside at a meeting to create some goals for next year - include fun activities that you'd like to do as a team.
Surprise the team by leaving little thank you notes and a small treat at each desk and in surgeries.
Share a joke with the team after lunch to give everyone a laugh.
Create a happy playlist to pep the group up if the mood is flat.
Make decorating the practice a team event.
Encourage one staff member each day to share what they've been most grateful for this year.
Stock the kitchen with some delicious summer fruits for everyone.
Create a fun challenge - who makes the best holiday cards or gingerbread house, who has the best-decorated desk or surgery.
Do a food drive and donate a hamper to those less fortunate.
Run a colouring-in competition and put the entries up around the practice for patients and staff to see. Ask patients to vote on their favourite.
Give out fun awards to team members every few days that acknowledges little, nice things about them, e.g. Jane gets the 'best hair' award, Bill gets the 'best puns' award, Sally gets the 'best lunches' award, 'Dani gets the 'best storyteller' award etc.
Encourage team members to share their best or funniest end of year holiday stories.
Arrange for each leader in the practice to share their gratitude for the team in the lead up to the end of the year.
Have team members share stories about the patients whose lives have been changed because of the care they received; that patient who smiles confidently now, that patient who no longer cries with fear. Be reminded of why the work your team does is so important.
This doesn’t all have to be arranged by you, the Practice Manager, either – get some team members involved and ask them for ideas on what will help them stay motivated. Good luck and enjoy the last weeks of the year!
